Main Program: Ed Thomas – “Mr. Tennis”.   Ed discussed the history of Tennis in the Salisbury area.  In the 1960’s many of the best players in the world used to come to Salisbury for the National Indoor Tennis Championship.  The tournament used to be held at the Civic Center (Bill Reardon promoted), which eventually became too small for the event and it moved to Memphis, Tennessee.  A “world class” outdoor tennis tournament will be held here at Salisbury University starting next Wednesday.  This will be used by some of the players as a warm up for the U.S. Open tournament.  Will go from 9 am to evening matches, Semi’s on Saturday and Finals on Sunday at 1pm.  Coastal Hospice will be the recipient of the a portion of the proceeds.  Come out and see some great tennis for a great cause!

Connor Hines also spoke to us about the Uganda World Fund.  The Rotary giving spirit of Mike Hines was certainly passed on to his grandson.  Connor explained how Uganda had been hit hard with both Aids and Starvation.  There is an effort to build an elementary and vocational school and raise money for supplies. The walls and roof are already up. The building will have up to 10 classrooms. The walls are made from bricks that they make themselves.  Most of it is based on volunteer efforts.    There are about 500 children in this community (Masaka, just Northwest of Lake Victoria), and at least 300 are orphans due to their parents dying from AIDS. Connor is trying to raise $3500 for travel expenses to get directly involved in the effort.   The Rotary Hat was passed and it was overflowing as usual!

50/50 Winners :  Art Cooley and Darryl Nixon (both put their winnings toward Connor’s trip)

       Enjoy Rotary!
