Next Meeting Time & Place: Next week’s meeting will NOT
be at the Rotary Scout and Community Center…. Those fortunate enough to
be able to go will be going to Tangier Island (Be at the Crisfield dock
at 5:30!) and the rest of us will be meeting at the Christian Shelter at
5:15 to put student book bags together. Song: Bob Brown led a rousing rendition of the song Music, Music, Music (otherwise known as "Put another Nickel in the Nickelodeon") Pledge: President Marion Keenan Prayer: Audrey Orr shared an Irish greeting and prayer. Head Table: Pete Cooper (who will celebrate his 97th birthday next week), Past District Governor Ted Merrill and speaker Tom Field, Acting Superintendent of Wicomico County Board of Education (WCBOE). Guests: Will Dyer and April Clyde (guests of President Marion), Joe Gilmore (guest of Darryl Nixon) Visiting Rotarians: Dan Macgulik Announcements: Ted Merrill announced an award of a District Simplified Grant of $700 to our club for President Marion’s application for book bags. Marie Calafiura reported on the success of donations for the student book bags and passed a bag around for collections. She received an additional $435 for our joint efforts with the other two Salisbury Rotary clubs. Way to go everyone. Pete Reddish encouraged everyone interested or who knew someone who might wish to join us at the Greenhill Golf Club for the September 20th shotgun golfing outing to sign up. Call Pete. Dave Morgan encouraged those who signed up for Blood Bank membership through our club to contact the Blood Bank to make sure they were a member and if not to contact him for an application. This is imperative to make sure you ARE covered. Steve Capelli announced the award of $7950 by Vic Laws in response to his challenge to raise enough money to pay off the Cabin mortgage. Combined with the donations by club members, this totaled $20,000 and makes the Cabin debt free. Congratulation to all who participated. Mark Glushakow reported on the raffle and presented another beer stein. President Marion announced that the Board, in a meeting earlier that day, had decided to more aggressively pursue the collection of pledges made by members for any event or collection whether the member attended or not (such as the wine tasting special event). Further it was decided that the collections are the responsibility of the event chairperson or their designated agent. Also President Marion reviewed the top three goal recommendations for the club this year. Main Program: Tom Fields presented an interesting and informative PowerPoint presentation on the Wicomico County Board of Education program for Alternative Education in the county. Many of the figures he presented indicated what a tough problem this is and how the Board of Education is taking a two-pronged approach to improving the performance of its students. A copy of the slides is available if interested. 50/50 Winners: There was no 50-50 drawing. Enjoy Rotary! |
