Meeting of August 23, 2007

Next Meeting Time & Place: Next meeting is at the RSCC on Thursday August 30,2007. The Program will be PRMC’s Autumn Romanowski; Exercises to Reduce DVT Risk when Flying. Don’t forget, there is a special Board meeting to consider a change to the By Laws at 4:30.

Main Program:  There were two programs going on simultaneously this week away from the RSCC!  The Special event was a Boat Trip to Tangier Island and those that couldn’t attend loaded up backpacks at the Christian Shelter.

Tangier Boat Trip: About 40 Rotarians and guests gathered aboard the Steven Thomas in Crisfield for the one-hour trip to Tangier Island, VA. Gordon Gladden acted as bar tender on board and we were treated to a delicious family style dinner at Hilda Crockett’s Chesapeake House restaurant. The menu included ham, crab cakes, clam fritters, potato salad, green beans, beets, applesauce, corn pudding, cole slaw, home made rolls and lemon pound cake. No one left hungry!

After dinner many took a tour of the island on a “stretch” golf cart and learned about the long history of the people on the island. Legend has it that Ambrose White originally purchased the island in 1670 from local Indians for the price of two coats. Tradition says that John Crockett later settled it and many of the approximately 1,000 permanent residents are his descendants. Today, electricity is provided by an underground cable and a school building built in 1997 has about 100 students in grades

K - 12, 13 teachers, with complete internet and long distance learning capability. There is one police officer, a fire truck and an ambulance. The main sources of income are from crabbing, fishing and tourism.

Special Events chairman Simpson Dunahoo gave thanks to Bob Lawrence and Gordon Gladden for their efforts in putting this trip together and making for a different and exciting evening.

Christian Shelter: Marie Calafiura, Otto Peters, Tom Layton and Tom Weiland plus 20-25 others filled about 350 backpacks from 5-7.  The Christian Shelter provided necessary workspace that was very helpful.  Great job to all for those needy kids in our community.

50/50 Winners :  There was no 50/50 this week.

       Enjoy Rotary!
