She thanked the Club for a $500.00 donation made last Spring. Mentoring is a one-on-one weekly meeting in the school between an at risk child and someone they can develop a relationship with. Any activity outside school is coordinated with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. The objective is to encourage success by better school attendance and improved grades. Last year there were 733 mentors, short of the over 800 needed. One half of the mentors are teachers or other BOE staff. Her program has won national recognition for 50% showing improved grades; 33% with better attendance and 45% fewer referrals to the office. Mentors from our Club include Terry Greenwood, Marion Keenan, Lee Whaley, George Whitehead, Chuck Whitmore and Fred Wierman. Henri concluded by asking each Rotarian to consider making a difference with a child by showing them success. She left application forms and other material with Youth Chairman, Mike Bloxham 50/50 Winners: $19.00 each to Hugh Livingston and Dan Williams Enjoy Rotary! |
